Basi-Virk trial delayed yet another week! Allegedly to resume Monday October 18

Before I could even summon up the courage to head to BC Supreme Court for the scheduled resumption of the Basi-Virk/BC Legislature Raid case comes the word I feared - once again the trial has been delayed - this time by another week.

The off again-off again trial is now slated to return Monday October 18. Believe it when you see it.

My colleague Neal Hall - who has been indefatigable in attending the non-trial for the past few months with little to report for it - has just posted the explanation on the Vancouver Sun's website.

A Crown decision to reorganize the witness list will "decrease the length of this trial substantially" according to Associate Chief Justice Anne MacKenzie, Neal reports.

At approaching the seven year anniversary of the police raid on the BC Legislature December 28, 2003 - I would certainly hope so!

The length of the trial would diminish quite a bit if the delays were greatly reduced. The costs must be huge by now and will get worse. The Judge is starting to look like someone who can't control her own court

Nice. They will remove witnesses that would make Gordon Campbell and the BC Liberals look bad. Thats a major problem in this case. The people who should be on trial are controlling the prosecution. Its like a drug kingpin being in charge of a trial of a street level pusher that worked for him. In neither case would/will justice be done...

I agree with DPL.

One would almost think that the judge is so protected by such iron-clad support that she need not fear any charges of incompetence or that other radio-active c-word.

I think the trial "costs" are only a small a fraction of the cost of what Campbell has done to BC and will continue to do, if he isn't exposed.

But you would certainly expect that an honourable judge would make every effort to acknowledge the costs by hearing the case as quickly and efficiently as possible.

The jury must be going nuts! Are they allowed to object?

AS I'VE SAID BEFORE WE HAVE TO GET OUT ON THE STREETS AND LET THE BC PUBLIC KNOW WHAT THE HELL IS/HAS BEEN GOING ON WITH OUR NON-JUSTICE SYSTEM!
WE ARE SLIDING DOWN A VERY SLIPPERY PATH! WITH OUT A REAL JUSTICE SYSTEM WITH REAL JUDGES W/BALLS TO STAND UP TO ORGANIZED CRIME AND WITHIN OUR LIBERAL GANGSTERS POLITICIANS OR W/ANY OTHER POLITICAL PARTY!

Justice delayed is justice denied.

The cost of the trail would diminish significantly if all the charges are dropped.

Wait for it...1...2...3...

This whole scene reminds me of a disturbed ants nest. All the ants run around bumping into one another in panic trying to repair the damage. Protect the Queen at all costs. (Sorry Gordon but ants don't bide a king very long.) Which brings us to the trial and the panic that seems to be setting in. Is a mistrial just around the corner? Who knows? It has been said before - - What a Gong Show.

If it was you or I, that had sold something that did not belong to us, we would have been in prison, the minute the judge heard the case. However, Premier Campbell, has made two sets of laws. His corrupt sale of, the citizens BC Railroad, has dragged on for years. If Campbell wasn't guilty, the case would have ended long ago. We all know, anyone opposing Campbell, loses their jobs. That we have seen more than once. Campbell does not employ the honest. They are ousted, from their positions, and, Campbell puts lap dogs in their places. There is no way, we can ever trust, Elections BC anymore, nor, the FOI. Anything Campbell touches, he dirties. Including the judicial system.

"For his story, Mr. Tieleman depends on the person he calls “my colleague Neal Hall [Vancouver Sun] – who has been indefatigable in attending the non-trial for the past months with little to report for it….” [That’s true.] Blandly (and, normally, logically) Mr. Tieleman goes on that Mr. Hall “has just posted the explanation”.

Not so.

Mr. Hall posted the excuse. Not the explanation. And he posted the excuse only, because – like Mr. Tieleman, it seems –
he won’t deal with what I believe is the explanation."

Robin Matthews has you dead to rights here Bill. Neal Hall defames the title "journalist" in my estimation - but of course he isn't alone - maybe he can get a real job in the biggest newsroom in the province - the Public Affairs Bureau!

I also really agree with Jeff Barkley's characterization of this charade - a drug kingpin orchestrating the trial of his own street level dealer.

I would suggest everyone interested in whats going on, not just in Banana Republic BC, check out Robin's latest contribution to vivelecanada, which connects the dots of the worldwide assault on the planet and its people by the increasingly fascisitic oligarchy.

Kootcoot - I disagree with your characterization of the situation with the trial as well as of Neal Hall and my own reporting - but I am more than willing to post your saying so here.

I encourage readers to look at my friend Robin Mathews article - it's at The Legislature Raids blog today - October 13 - you can get there via my links at the bottom of the page.

But your "explanation" and Robin's doesn't hold water - allegations against Special Prosecutor Bill Berardino regarding past legal firm connections were made and did not result in any change in his status.

If there is any explanation beyond what has been reported it would be that this trial is a complex mess.

One can only hope that it gets back on track, hears from the witnesses necessary and the patient jury makes the right decision based on the evidence.

That's pure hogwash Bill - how could it result in a change in his "status" his appointment was an abuse of the Special Prosecutor situation even more egregious than Nixon firing Cox during Watergate. Hell, Nixon is spinning in his grave with jealousy over what Campbell manages to pull off and I am disappointed that you buy into it! Give your head a shake and look at the joke this whole investigation and trial has been!

There is either going to be a mistrial or the jury is gonna have to promise their grandchildren will replace them in the jury later in the so-called trial!

It is clear to anyone that this is a show trial of scapegoats and I'm not dumb enough to buy it!

"One can only hope that it gets back on track, hears from the witnesses necessary "

As if this kabuki play was ever "on track" and AS IF the parachuted judge would ever even suggest that the "witnesses" be responsive or not show total contempt of the judicial process! Are you angling for a job with PostMedia or the PABlum brigade?

Do others feel as I do -- that watching Chile behave with such enormous humanity toward their 33 trapped miners and the 33 families was a wonderful experience ...

seeing the level of concern, from top to bottom -- from president to workers to families -- was like a tonic. Solidarity didn't make Chileans weaker, it made them strong.

The town of Copiapo, Chile have shown me, at least, that harmony is not only possible but downright beneficial to entire populations.

And they tell us that this social concern is an impossible pipedream!
