Talk AM 1410 radio shuts down - converts to all sports radio

Word just out that Talk 1410 AM radio has shut down its operations and converted to an all sports format, to be known as TEAM 1410.

Also know as CFUN, Talk 1410 has been doing talk radio in various forms since 1996, most recently hiring former CITY TV broadcaster Simi Sara as their morning show host.

Condolences to Simi, producer Renee Lukacs and other news and talk radio staff there.

The shrinking world of Vancouver media unfortunately leaves less and less room for diverse opinions.

Looks like perhaps they were to outspoken about the gordo. He waves his magic wand (phones someone at the station) and they change to another sports show. Like we need more knuckledraggers all puffed up about sports and the olympics. LOL We are doomed.

That totally sucks, what can we do to bring them back, maybe not all of them, but at least Joe, Nikki, Patrick, Kate, Simi.

This is an ongoing trend in radio in BC. There was a time when there were talk radio shows in the air in almost all the towns of the province. Now it it down to Vancouver, Victoria and Kelowna (though I am not certain about Kelowna)

It is ironic that talk radio is dieing in BC when this is where talk radio as an idea started in 1963 by Pat Burns on CJOR.

Though I wonder about the business smarts of having two sports radio stations in town with only one major league sports team.......

I assume 1410 will go through the sort lingering problems the one time CJOR has gone through.

I just can't beleive it! Now it's 980am or no talk radio at all in a city the size of Vancouver. As a female listener why the &^#$ do I need two sports shows to listen too all day everyday while driving. Thank god for satelite radio! Good bye Vancouver radio.

This makes me so angry! Now I don't get to listen to Coast To Coast AM, one of the best programs on the radio. Well I hope that sports nuts (read: dumbasses) enjoy their station...for the last hour they've just been talking about different types of slam dunks...:( I'M SO MAAAAAD!!!

Wow!.. Talk about pulling the rug out from under it's listeners - I guess CHUM doesn't really give a rats behind about their loyal listeners in Vancouver.. I won't be listening to ANY of CHUM's stations now!
Soo sad to loose this station :((..

Sports talk radio is the only thing worth listening. Politics are for losers and it shows. No one cares to listen.

My wife and I would listen to Coast to Coast every night now we have to get it drifting in and out on 1530 AM out of Sacramento. So much for giving the listeners what they want in this town.Well I guess it's back to listening to satellite radio all the time. This town really sucks on the AM-FM bands.

Interesting market segmentation...

So, essentially 1410 becomes (formerschmoesof)SportsPage#2?

I blame this on Phillip Till and the destruction of the (nolonger)soGiant's'98 market dominance that let the pre-CTVBellGlobeChumRDSTSNEverythingElseYouCanPossiblyThinkOf TEAM1040 into the game.

(and/or the genuises' at CORUS' decision to give up the rights to Canuckleheads' games)

I'm afraid I had to abandon canadian talk radio a while ago. My blood pressure was going up and I get no satisfaction listening to Bill Good and other corporate sycophants. I now am a fan of american democratic talk radio. My favourites are Bob Kincaid, Mike Malloy, Randi Rhodes, Ron Reagan (yes the son of former president Ronald Reagan but totally the opposite political stripe), Robert Kennedy Jr and Ed Schultz. Tom Hartman is also great.

Its truely a joy to listen to SANE people talk about current issues! I know its not BC or Canadian local topics, but you'll be surprised how many of their struggles are our struggles.

I listen to them all on my computer. One of the simplest to try is KPTK Seattle. Here is the link, enjoy! http://www.am1090seattle.com/ just click on the listen live button.

"Courage truth and substance" is what we need in a talk station. Maybe that's not possible any more. You guys had the beginning of a great possibilities . Maybe too scary for you.

So what happen to all the ppl in that station? Did they get fire? or did they switch to another station?

so disappointed to see the end of talk radia. It was a great way to stay current on the concerns of today. What we don't need is another sports station. We need current information that we can discuss and have conversation about. Hopefully the it will be reconsidered.

I worked at that station 40 years ago jwhen we had people like Terry David Mulligan, J.B.Shane, Rick Honey, Bob Boving, Doc Holiday, Daryl B, Webster;and others too numerous to mention made the late 60's and early seventies the golden age of AM radio.

Would the hiring of Rafe Mair(1410) have anything to do with it? It had to be Gordo the Hawaiin slush,or Pattison that had Rafe removed from cknw, which is BC's less listened to station.
And sports. These MMA fighters and the Ultimate Fighters, are they retired hockey players or are they training to qualify for some hockey team We don't watch either one.
It's a hell of a thing when numb nut Campbell can destroy our wild stock fishery and tell the neocons radio stations like CKNW to back off. CKNW has been told by Campbell ..to cover the olympics for the next 4 months.Pretty sick .
When a guy like Rafe want's to tell the other side of the story and gets fired. That is the action of some pretty sick people
Bill Good is a pain in the ass.

What the hell are you thinking about changing to a totally boring, boring sports channel? The interviews with inarticulate people are pathetic substitutes for the programmes you have eliminated.

the last I heard was that Simi was going on a vacation, and I thought, how are they going to manage without her? She made me get interested back into politics, what a charge......then the next day i turned into my radio and thought what the he....., and put to them (the powers that be) they hadn't planned well enough to have a sub for Simi,,,,,,then I tuned in the next day over several different times...even when I for sure expected another radio host to be on...was not there!!!!What the he....? I will not go back to 1410 cfun EVVVVVVERRRR!!!!!!!!! No warning!!! No sign from the radio hosts....what the fuc@@@@@@ NOW THERE WILL BE NO MORE FREE SPEECH....NO MORE OPEN OPINIONS....NO MORE INTEREST IN THE CITIES POLITICS....WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO RADIO????? I CAN'T TELL YOU HOW ANGRY AND FRUSTRATED I AM SCREW YOU ALL WHO HAVE MADE THIS DESICION BECAUSE YOU HAVE LOST A LISTENER FOREVER....NEVER AGAIN!!!!

WHY DID YOU NOT LET US KNOW THAT THIS WAS GOING TO HAPPEN? HOW IGNORANT OF THIS STATION!!!!!!

Talk 1410 didn't actually hire Rafe Mair, but they were working on a deal just a couple of weeks ago for Rafe to do a short editorial daily Monday-Friday.

Here's my take on this: http://broughton.ca/bob-broughtons-blog-mainmenu-26/144-talk-1410

I am a sport talk show listener and let me tell you people that this transition sucks, they talk about American sports all day specially football. At the end of the day I think Olympic 2010 is one of the big reasons why this station is shut. Employees probably got thick compensation packs and lot of restrictions for thier careers such as hoing independent or being a part of similar genere of talk show radio
