Jack Layton - Leader of the Official Opposition, Leader of the New Democratic Party - has passed away

Jack Layton, Bill Tieleman, Tom Mulcair - September 28, 2007
Jack Layton has passed away this morning, cancer claiming his life but never his spirit.

I have known Jack since the 1980s - I am saddened by his sudden loss at the height of his triumph at becoming leader of the Official Opposition for the first time in the New Democratic Party's history.

More here later - condolences to all his family, friends and colleagues - it is truly tragic.

My family and I thought the world of Jack. My only regret is that we never got to meet him. Still, we will miss him greatly.

He was amazing, and exactly as you would expect in person. The question now, and I know people don't want to talk about it yet, but it needs to be talked about is who can even come close to filling his shoes? The only option that I can see is Nathan Cullen. Young, Vibrant, works many of the collaberative approaches Jack has, a steadfast on his environmental beliefs, may even be able to bring onboard some of the green voters. He's articulate, positive, inspiring and he gives me hope, much like Jack did...I just don't know if he would even consider it an option with 2 1yr old twins.

I too am very sad about Jack's passing. I am also sorry for Olivia. They were devoted to each other. A wonderful couple.

I met Jack a few times, many years ago. He was a true Canadian, he fought very hard for his people.

He passed his wisdom on to his Party, right up to the end. That was how dedicated he was, to Canada and the people.

We will miss Jack. Canada will miss Jack.

I'm not a fan of the NDP any more than the Liberals or Conservatives but he seemed genuine enough that I would have considered voting for him if I had the opportunity. During the spring election I was hoping he could pull off a huge upset to become PM, first one I could stomach since the heyday of Pierre Trudeau when I was 10.

Tonight as this goes out,Christy Clark is on Multi-Cultural TV in Richmond proclaiming her deep love and respect for Jack Layton.

Over the past eighteen years love and respect never left Christy's mouth on any topic let alone regarding The Honourable Mr. Jack Layton.

It was always socialists and union "apes" whenever the subject of the NDP or any of its leaders and members ever came up.

Madame Premier you are disgusting!
