VanCity Credit Union elections - my choices are Yaron, O'Brien & McDade

VanCity Credit Union elections for 3 Directors are on right now and my choices are Gil Yaron, Jan O'Brien and Greg McDade.

I know all three - and I formerly sat on the VanCity Board with Greg - and recommend them to readers as good choices to continue the progressive leadership that has made VanCity successful.

You can find more information about each candidate at these links:

Gil Yaron

Jan O'Brien

Greg McDade

Voting in select branches ends April 21.  Online and mail in ballot voting ends on April 27.

I really object to you putting yourself out there as some sort of expert on who I should vote for Bill.

Please, you have no special expertise in this field, only a platform.

I can make up my own mind, thanks.

Agree there. Also worth considering:

- Van City was started by Bob Williams of the NDP, and had alot of NDP hacks on the Board of Directors. It still has alot of left wing leanings into it. Despite many left wingers hating
anything to do with the financial system.

VanCity is also in a legal sense a Corporation.

-While technically a credit union,
VanCity does much of its administratiive work under the banking environment, and is also technically a bank. It uses the same banking system as The Big Banks.

The electoral process is a bit flawed, There should never be any "recommended" labels placed onto candidates by the institutions that conduct elections to elect them.

Bill is free to do as he wishes, as irritating as these "endorsements" (read: I know these people and want you to vote for them) are.

I am in favor of people offering their endorsements but your reasons for endorsing these three individuals are base primarily on the fact you know them.  I would have loved to hear more specific reasons of why you endorse these individuals in relation to the contribution they can offer the Credit Union.  I have to admit it makes me question your motivation.

Heck I don't always agree with what Bill says nor does his choice sway mine. But since it's his blog, I figure he can say whatever he wants on it. And surprise surprise, he has selected them same folks as the two voting members in our family. so maybe great minds do think alike and since we both use recognizable sign in names our choices are known, unlike someone calling her or himself "Anon"

Not in this instance. Bill is a great mind.

and since we both use recognizable sign in names our choices are known, unlike someone calling her or himself "Anon"

When the choices being "known" are pretty much miniscule in value since there are not a huge majority of VanCity member voters that visit this blog and vote because of what is "recommended". Even if it is from someone using a collection of letters they decide upon in any form to label themselves.

Anon 6:23 a.m. - If you don't want to hear my opinion, don't read the blog! Of course you can make up your own mind - take my advice or leave it.

But as to "special expertise" - I am a former Director of VanCity Credit Union. I sat on that board with Greg McDade, so I can certainly say he did a good job as a fellow Director.

I've known Jan O'Brien for over 30 years - I have great confidence in her abilities and she is an incumbent Director.

I've known Gil Yaron for about 20 years, starting with his work on pension funds administration issues. I believe he would be an excellent Director.

To Anon 10:40 a.m. - I've given links to their websites so you can look at their skills and experience - I don't need to list it here - and it truly is up to you to decide.

So Bill, why the "recommended"labels on specific candidates? Can you imagine if the NDP came along and said Joe Sixpack was "recommended" but you (also running for the same post) were not?

It's a bit of light favouritism as in "we have these candidates, but those over there are the ones we recommend you 'seriously consider" (read: vote for).

Interesting article in the Straight about the VanCity election.

Since you were part of VanCity and still know the directors, you should advocate removal of that 'recommended' label. Better yet, get going and advocate for its removal at the next AGM.

Anon 6:42 p.m. - I don't agree with the "recommended" vs. not recommended decision by VanCity - and you will note that one of my choices is not recommended.

Well Bill, do something about it.

Get a bunch of members together at the AGM and tell the Board to dump it.

Decisions can always be overturned, constitutional amendments can always be made and those Board members report to the attending membership at an AGM.

If some of the anons actually belong to Van City, they get to vote and attend meetings. Maybe they should do what they are suggesting that a member should do.It's easy to ask others to do things but better if you go there and do it yourself. We have been members since the early 80's. Vote always and have yet to see an issue big enough to go to the AGM and vent

So why don't you take the initiative and start the change? You seem to cry, rant and rave about everything you don't like out there in politics, so here something within your own environment that you can work on to get it changed, since you've been a member of VanCity since the early 1980s.

Get movin if ya want to be provin.

Van City's nomination process is so flawed that I think I will park my money elsewhere in future. It is worth than some strata council elections and it takes quite a bit to get that bad.
