BC's Political Twitter Influencers unveiled - Hill & Knowlton tabulates Twitter and I rank #7 among journalists

Here are the Masters of BC's Political TwitterVerse!

The smart folks at Hill & Knowlton Strategies Canada came up with a great idea - measure the influence of BC's Twittering journalists and politicians and tabulate the results into BC's Political Twitter Influencers.

I am very pleased to see that I ranked Number 7 on the Journalist side - snide comments from BC Liberals now accepted - but I am thrilled since I am the only weekly columnist and blogger on the list versus all the full-timers.

And even more satisfying - that I have been on Twitter longer than any other Top 10 journalist and any politician save the trendy Spencer Chandra-Herbert, who bested me by a few months.

I can see that I have to boost my follower numbers and my output to take on the likes of top ranked Number 1 Keith Baldrey of Global TV and Number 2 Gary Mason of the Globe and Mail - but I believe their endless Tweets about the Vancouver Canucks and other sports trivia should be omitted from the count, if only for the sake of Twitter's readability!  ;-)

BC Liberal Education Minister George Abbott takes top honours on the Politicians side, ahead of even Premier Christy Clark, while BC NDP Leader Adrian Dix leads for the opposition side.

No doubt this Twitter tale of the tape will make for intense competition in the year ahead.

Here's Hill & Knowlton's graphic presentation of their results:

Congratulations Bill.

You have done us proud. You have worked very hard for the people of this province. Your integrity shines through, with everything you write, your radio conversations and, in your appearances on T.V.

I could name more than a few, that, I take their word for nothing.

Good job Bill.

As about as exciting as a collection of "me and so and so" staged pictures.

Also Bill isn't correctly lumped in with the journalists who have to file stories with their editor.
That's their job.

Twitter is getting over-rated. Getting to be race to the bottom in terms of quality. With Baldrey's sports speculations and Tieleman's obtuse observations
is there really any value in writing a dozen or so Tweets every day just to be ahead of someone else?

I think that there is a better case to be made to omit any tweet Gary Mason makes about politics out here while he moonlights as the Globe’s fake local Alberta Election correspondent. After all, I gather this ranking is supposed to be about BC tweeters.

I suppose that Twitter serves a purpose for bulletins, like the pedestrian death you tweeted about the day I wrote this, but for any depth of commentary, I still fail to see the point of the thing I don’t follow it all that much and have no plans to sign up.

It is too bad that Mr. Mason isn’t spending more time digging into detail in this election. For instance, he could ask NDP leader Brian Mason why he goes on about the evils of referendums and cites a place as far away as California as an example. You must feel terribly offended that he snubs your own work on the referendum campaign against the HST in BC. Or he could have done a bit more investigation as to whether or not Amanda Wilkie was tweeting on taxpayer time or hardware.

Sadly, it looks like he won’t be tweeting about Canucks much longer. Go Sens, I guess.

Bill:

I enjoy reading your work and while I don't always agree with you, have the greatest respect for your right to express your own beliefs.

I fail to understand however, why you are delighted to be associated with most of those who are listed as 'journalists'. Most have nothing of value to say - either they parrot the views of the party line or their employers, or they provide endlessly annoying hockey updates. Volume is no indication of value.

I was surprised to see my usually invisible provincial representative listed as #8 in the MLAs. If he - who has done very little for this constituency - has actually gained some sort of recognition based on his empty tweets, it reinforces how trivial 'tweeting' has become.

I read Bill's twitter when I need a good laugh. Good to see my contribution counting!

Exactly. It's not essential to anyone's well-being.

It's more vanity than anything else.

Just like most blogs.
