Erik Bornmann "good character" hearing set for March 24, 2008

Key Basi-Virk crown witness Erik Bornmann's attempts to become an Ontario lawyer will have to wait until at least March 24, 2008.

That's when the Law Society of Upper Canada, which regulates lawyers in Ontario, has decided it will conduct a "good character" hearing into Bornmann's application.

That application has been on hold for some time and was to have taken place on November 5 but due to delays in the trial of former BC Liberal ministerial aides David Basi and Bob Virk on breach of trust charges, it has again been put off.

Bornmann is alleged by police to have bribed Basi and Virk in exchange for confidential government information on the $1 billion privatization of BC Rail in 2003. Government communications aide Aneal Basi, David Basi's cousin, faces money laundering charges connected to monies alleged paid.

LSUC Acting Communications Director Helen Stone said today that the hearing will take place on March 28, 2008 in Toronto.

A BC Supreme Court update on the Basi-Virk case is scheduled for Friday November 16 at 9 a.m. to determine which matters can go ahead at the December 3 start of defence applications and a second conference will be held on Friday November 23 at 8 a.m.

Very interesting. They should sell tickets to this one, its going to be standing room only.

I wonder if the federal liberal brain trust will show up to support their old friend. Lets see if Mike Witherly or Jamie Elmhirst will show up, or Martin MacLaughlin for that matter. I understand several prominent federal liberals gave reference letters to bornmann in his bid to become a member of the bar. If this is true I can't wait to find out what they said about him. Do they agree with his accusations against bruce clark - the chief fundraiser for the federal liberals in bc? Remember bornmann made very serious accusations about bruce clark and his links to this affair. Maybe, if we are lucky we will find out who invited the "self confessed briber of public officials" to the official state luncheons hosted by then pm martin in vancouver.

So many questions Bill and so few answers from the "self confessed briber of public officials". In the interim we wait!!

Bill,

Have there been any further developments on the 'Deal/No Deal' issue that you and Neal Hall reported on back in the spring?

Thanks,
RossK.

I await with some interest Ti hear just how low down the scale they will go to get one more lawyer. If the stories he hear about this fellow are even partly true and the accept him, we will know for sure why lawyers are held in such contempt by so many folks. DL

Another federal liberal scandal. What makes this so delicious is the fact one of the "chosen" ones, the infamous bornmann is at the centre of it all. Oh what I would give to be a fly on the wall as mr. teflon jamie elmhirst broods over what his next spin will be as this spiderweb is untangled! I wonder what role elmhirst has in this affair. What should poor jamie and his fellow federal liberals do now, its quite a connundrum. Ole bornmann has said some pretty nasty things about bruce clark. If what one of your posters has said is true I am eagerly looking forward to these character reference letters that were submitted by prominent federal liberals supporting bornmann. They must agree with his accusations against clark, why else would they give bornmann letters of reference for his character hearing.

They should tell a very interesting story for sure. With a federal election around the corner, a nomination meeting coming in vancouver/quadra, what a great time to be an opponent of the federal liberals!!

Bill,

As "Gary E" over at my place is saying: how does the Law Society of Upper Canada know (as it appears that they know) that the Basi Virk Basi BC Rail trial will be over by March 24 or 28 ??

Didn't they call off the original Bornmann hearing because they wanted to see the key questions of bribery unfold in B.C. Supreme Court first?

And only after that, would the LSUC be able to decide whether Erik passes the good smell ... er, good character test?
